Motorcycle Officer’s family settles lawsuit againist Harley-Davidson and H-D Dealer

A deal between the family of a Raliegh police officer Charles Radford Paul, Harley-Davidson and Ray Price Harley Davidson has been announced but the actual terms have not been disclosed.

In 2002, Charles was thrown off his Electra Glide and was killed. His family sued the city of Raleigh, Harley-Davidson Motor Co. and Ray Price Harley Davidson. The city has already settled with the family for $366,000 and the rest was settled around May 5th.

What is interesting about this case is that the family was suing on the basis that a high-speed wobble caused the motorcycle to become uncontrollable. That H-D and the dealer along with the city were responsible because high speed wobbles had been noted in the Electra Glide model Charles rode.

While this is not a admission of guilt by Harley-Davidson, the dealer or the city, it does open the door for more discussion of whether or not H-D motorcycles are suited for police work.. If they do really have problems with high speed wobble, this could mean that future purchasing of police motorcycles could exclude Harley’s until the problem is fixed. At the very least, it could make police departments look at the other different types of police bikes offered by other motorcycle manufacturers.
