My friend Sam Lawrence unveiled his latest project, Blackbox Republic on the world today. Billed as an online relationship market for the sex positive community, the site features event planning, commerce, and mobile features on top of a general social networking platform. I will admit that when Sam first pinged me about this I thought it was an elaborate prank… “a social network for the ‘ sex positive ‘ community?” what my first reaction followed quickly by “is it a porn thing?” and then “okay this must be a prank and I’d better play along so as not to give him the satisfaction of punking me”.

Yesterday morning, we finished construction on the 20th and final fuel efficient cook stove in my community. I took a deep breath as I rode on the back of a motorcycle to my house (yes, it was walkable, but it’s hot, ok) where I bathed, had a coffee, and then set off to a neighboring community, where a PCV friend has recently finished construction on an aqueduct and was celebrating with an inauguration. We listened to speeches, ate huge plates of food, and danced the night away, me secretly celebrating my accomplishment along with his.

The 58-year-old Clifton resident said the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, made her realize life is too short to shy away from adventure. She’s gotten a motorcycle, jumped out of a plane and swam with dolphins.

McDonagh’s Amusements told Carnival that so far the season has seen a lot of rain with some spots up and some not so good. New rides that hopefully will be out soon are a refurbished Round Up and a used Orbiter that originally belonged to Crown Amusements. Playland Amusements of Auburn, New York has acquired three kiddie rides for the 2009 season. They are an Eli Kiddie Scrambler, an Eli Wheel and an Eyerly Ladybug. Playland recently played the Barnard Firemen’s Carnival in the Rochester suburb of Greece, N.Y.

First of all, Happy Bastille Day! Yes, July 14 is the day the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille fortress and prison, signaling the beginnings of the New French Republic. Once, as a child, I tried to wish someone a “ Happy Bastille Day” but misspoke and ended up insulting the person’s parentage and legitimacy. Because, ethnically-speaking, I’m a mutt, I do believe there is some French dressing in our family salad…sorry about that…sounds alternately gross and naughty. I recently attended the AIIM Road show 2009, aptly titled “ People and Documents working together ”, and located at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. The show was supported by a number of exhibitors including HP Software, IBM, OnBase, Kodak, Kofax, Vignette, Xerox DocuShare. The two key note speeches were interesting listening and certainly whetted my appetite for more information. The focus on the first keynote was on the two words from the title “ Working ” and “ Together ” – both symbolising aspects of enterprise content management (ECM) systems.

Canada’s biggest motorcycle road race returns Major league racing in the Greater Toronto Area continues on two wheels this weekend when Canada’s biggest motorcycle road racing event of the year, the Parts Canada Superbike Doubleheader, returns to Mosport, July 17-19. Mosport’s 4 kilometre road course will host rounds four and five of national Parts Canada Superbike Championship featuring Canada’s top professional riders.

Although there had been some concern that budget woes would prevent the city of Boston from providing security for Sail Boston 2009 , the event happened regardless this weekend, with plenty of police officers on the waterfront to make sure everyone stayed safe while checking out the tall ships during their annual visit. On Sunday afternoon, crowds at the Charlestown Navy Yard were well-behaved, giving several motorcycle cops a chance to take a rest in the shade while a throng of kids and camera-wielding parents admired their wheels.

This past Thursday we went up to our clinic in Gatineau as usual, not knowing that a routine 8-10 hour work day was going to turn into a rugged 24 hour shift! We saw over 40 patients during the day, and at 4:30pm had the truck all packed up to start our drive home, feeling contented that we had been of service to so many people, but tired after what had been a busy day. I put the key in the ignition and turned it and the engine went chug-chug-chug, but didn’t turn over. So, I tried again.

Matt and I took our annual trip to Boone County Raceway in Albion, NE yesterday. Before I talk about racing I have to thank my son for not incurring the wrath of local law officials for the first time in three years. I won’t mention what he did the past two years-OK, I will too, he ran a stop sign and tried to drive through a parade. Anyway, not having to listen to local cops give Matt a lecture was definitely a good thing.

June 12, 2009, Douglas, Isle of Man – On June 12, the world’s first zero emissions motorcycle race was held on the legendary Isle of Man track. The entry from Electric Motorsport, a Green Tech company based in Oakland, California, won the race. Riding the cycle was Isle of Man native Chris Heath. The Native TTXGP which won the race is a modified version of the Electric GPR-S, an electric motorcycle that Electric Motorsport has been manufacturing since 2003. The founder and CEO of the 8 year old company is Todd Kollin.

Lying on the western shore of Lake Batur, along the roller-coaster road from Kedisan to Songan, the resort village of Toya Bungkah features an invigorating hot springs, massive cinemascopic views, and a black-sand beach. Many travelers choose to stay in Toya Bungkah rather than Kedisan because the latter has too many Bali Aga while the former is more a mixture of Balinese and Javanese. Japan crossed with Mexico. Hack, mash, and lash everything together. Very hot and thick, humid and prone to short heavy rains. Bangkok is larger than expected, with a higher skyline. Slum-like in many ways but comfortable. Dirty, aged, grafitti’d, tagged, polluted, smelly, hungry, buggy, feral. Friendly, smiley, reverent, strong, spiritualized, watery, creative, delicious, surviving with tenacity. Temples & tenements, luxury hotels and megamalls. Insane traffic and transport.
