Obama forces federal drivers to stop texting while driving
While there are many states that have banned texting while driving, there has been no national oversight of a problem that can kill anyone on the road. But on Tuesday, President Obama has pressed forward by signing an executive statement ordering all federal employees to stop texting while driving on the job. In doing so, President Obama may have helped save the lives of bikers that this form of distracted driving could have killed.
On Wednesday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called distracted driving a serious epidemic. Figures released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed more than 5,800 distracted driving deaths and 515,000 injuries last year
Hopefully all state agencies will ban texting while driving and every state will pass laws similar to the statement that will help save your life on the road.
The order bans federal employees from text messaging — which it defines to include e-mailing, instant messaging or obtaining navigational information — when driving government-owned vehicles or private vehicles while on government business.
Hopefully these changes will save people from accidents that could have been avoided and will reduce the chance of you being involved in a accident caused by a distracted driver.
